Light
Some people don’t understand what I mean by scale.
The tether and ribs of the lantern on the left and the ribbons on the maypole on the right are the smallest parts of the papercut I’m making.
To determine the size of the finished piece, I need to know how small I can properly cut them out.
I will make one or two pieces to determine the scale the smallest piece needs to be in order to know the size of the finished work.
Often the theme of the finished piece is not reflected in the scale study, therefor I will sometimes create a new symbolism in the study that has no place in the parent piece.

These are the last four of the items I’m taking down to the Art Bar ‘tiny art’ show in Riverwest/Milwaukee for the opening next weekend.
Nine of the eleven pieces I made for the show all take place at night and have similar subject matter.
Also, all but two are double panes and the last one I made (bottom left above) has three panes of glass.
This is still kind of an experimental process for me, but I’m enjoying it, so it’s here to stay for a while.

*(top left was privately sold and will not be in the show)

I’ve been really busy lately and haven’t been able to keep up with posts on here.
These are all things that I’ve been working on.
A month or so ago, Amity Skateboards contacted me to design a board for them. The parameters were right up my alley, “Do whatever you want.”.
I was having trouble incorporating their old logo of a pine tree into the design, so I made a nautical themed logo.
Luckily they liked it and it will be used on the deck.
The heart with the f-holes was just me messing around with ideas.
The blindfolded bunny holding a plant that grows fire is a study for a larger piece on life and fertility.
I’ll post either that one or more letters next.
There will also be a new postcard collection soon. Some of the cards were misprinted and I’m waiting for the corrected order to arrive.

You Shouldn't Mess With MeStrangely enough, this started out with me wanting to try and make skirt with more details.
After the study I did a few weeks ago, I made a small fern papercut as a gift, and I decided that I wanted to use a fern as a bottom border.
Then a broad mix of Japanese and Norse folklore and mythology took over.
This took a long time to cut out because when it was printed, they decided to upgrade the paper quality without asking me and what I got was so dense, that it was very difficult to cut.
Anyway, I think it turned out pretty good despite the setback.
Still, I hope to not use this paper again.

Postcard Boxes: Volumes 1-3I took a break from making work for the “tiny art” show so that I could finish designing fronts and backs for collections of my postcards.
I decided to use original art that I hadn’t used for other purposes before and Katurah and I finalized the design and layout over the weekend.
Each volume will contain 10 sequential postcards & envelopes, plus the front and back cards and will housed in an acrylic box similar to most card collections. All postcards are the same as the ones I have for sale with the exception of #1, which is out of print, and #21, which was a limited edition.  They will contain slightly different reprints of those two.
With luck, these should be for sale in about 2 weeks.

Emptiness Keeps You SearchingI always make something for the solstices, and I try to for each equinox. This month I have been distracted by many things and I completely forgot that the autumnal equinox was today until Sunday morning. Unfortunately my Sunday was planned already, so I got up with Katurah at 4:30 on Monday and started designing this. I had the design done by 9:00 and had it all cut out by 4:00 pm. I try and knock out a papercut from start to finish on New Years Day, but that is the only time I do something at that pace. For some reason, doing one for today seemed important yesterday morning and here is the result. You should see some of my crazy alternate ideas for this.
I had on Richard & Linda Thompson, Jimmie Rodgers, The Divine Comedy, Galaxie 500 and House of Love most of the morning if you are wondering where my head was. This is not a representation of a real stone circle; I made it up, but it was inspired by the very few ocean side megalithic structures on the coast of France.
The symbol in the corner is the Wheel of the Year symbol for Mabon, which is today, with a bay branch inside of it.
I learned a lot about Mabon yesterday that I did not previously know.
This had several titles. I often have a hard time naming my work. I want it to represent what I was feeling while making it, but I also hate defining it. I infer so much from my inspirations that I wouldn’t want to nail down a specific meaning for anyone viewing it, so…husband/wife, brother/sister, widowed neighbors, orphans, cousins, strangers, someone in custody…your call.
I will tell you the boat is leaving.

Fall 2014 postcardsI just got home from a fun night at the Waxwing Fall Art Showcase. I was going save this for Monday, but the tea I drank for the ride home is keeping me awake. I ordered the first 8 images (click for larger image) above as new postcards and I should hopefully have them by next weekend and for sale shortly after.
I ordered second editions of the bottom two as well. The bottom left image was my very first postcard that I sent out in 2012 and the bottom right was a post card created exclusively for an Indiegogo campaign. To keep the originals unique, these will be on a different card stock than the originals and the backs are going to be different. The back of the black and white card originally didn’t have a space for the address and the Indiegogo card was originally in full color on both sides. These re-prints will have the same scheme as the rest my postcards and a ‘B’ will be added to their serial number.
I will never be collectible, but just in case, take care of your ltd. ed. originals!
I am still trying to source just the right kind of postcard box containers to have 3 different collections of 10 available soon.
Hopefully they will be completed by the holidays.
Have a nice weekend.
